Sketching: Drawing Techniques for Product Designers
March’s book of the month is a dynamite reference for any artist looking to better their drawing skills. Concept artists and production designers have many things in common (orthographic needs, work flows, functional imaginations) and this book highlights many useful areas such as perspective, ellipses, simplifying shapes and surface/textures. It’s packed with great illustrations, lots of marker work and great tips as it relates to simple shapes and volume. I’m also happy to see the variety of work in this book…they provide drawing example of simple objects (gas cans, glasses and boxes) all the way up to vehicle interiors and exploded drawings. Overall it’s a wonderful book with many solid illustrations (and info graphics) that “show” the value of perspective, construction lines, planes, center lines and ellipses. If you’re looking for a good book that details the fundamentals in action…look no further.
